Mainers Brave Icy Water for Good Cause

It is illogical to assume that anybody would willingly jump into icy, subzero temperatures, just for the heck of it. However, when jumping into frozen lakes/ ponds helps to raise funds for a great cause, it seems illogical NOT to jump in. For those of you who are not from New England, when winter rolls around, many towns throughout the area come up with fun and exciting charity/ fundraising ideas to get the community involved and raise awareness.

Many towns will hold annual “Polar Plunge” or “Ice Out” plunges as a way to show support for people who are afflicted by disease, or to help the families of individuals with mental impairments . Most of these events charge an entry fee, which is later donated to their particular cause. More often than not, participants will donate a significant amount of money on top of the entry fee, as they want to provide as much support as possible.

Every year there is a significant turnout at plunges throughout the state of Maine. The frozen toes and fingers are only temporary, but the unwavering support and sense of pride in the community is eternal. This past week, in Winthrop, Maine, scores of people took the plunge into Lake Maranacook to raise funds for Special Olympics Maine. In total, the participants raised over $28,000 dollars.

Overall, the plunge is a great experience. It brings the community closer together, and everyone has the time of their lives, all while raising money for a great cause. It is definitely something I’ll have to participate in the next time I am home.
